Ruth has an amazing way of reaching children to teach music. She uses the cutest songs, toys, movements, and techniques to teach our daughter. Each lesson builds upon the next. Our daughter thinks the activities are fun.
At one point, my daughter was not wanting to continue music. But she has such a natural talent for it! Ruth met her where she was in the moment. She changed some things around to reinvigorate her learning and desire to play.

She has done in person lessons, and now through zoom. Ruth is an amazing teacher, very professional, and sweet. She uses effective methodologies and I have seen lots of progress through the years.

After not having success with my 9-year old daughter’s first introduction to violin, I reached out to Ruth Roland in hopes that a new instructor and learning approach might be the necessary spark to reengage my daughter’s initial excitement about learning to play violin.
Without a doubt, it was one of the best decisions for her learning journey. After an initial assessment, Ruth communicated a clear lesson plan that identified weekly goals for both me and my daughter. Most importantly, her patience, flexibility and use of both individual and group lessons have significantly increased my daughter’s confidence in her ability to learn and progress. I truly realized that we had turned a corner when she began to learn new and more advanced songs within days and even asked to join her school’s band so that she could learn a new instrument. Needless to say, I wholeheartedly recommend lessons with Ruth Roland!

I went through a time where I lost my ability to use vibrato on the violin. I was not sure how it happened or why and could not do anything to fix it.
I was extremely frustrated and upset with myself at the loss: it was as if it had happened overnight. I had no idea why the technique I had been using for vibrato had stopped working or what I could do to fix it . I feared the loss was permanent.
While I had several peers who played beautifully, I was having trouble producing any vibrato at all and felt extremely inadequate. I was also worried that it would be unfixable and dreaded hearing that from someone who could possibly help. My mom convinced me to see what a new teacher could do for me.
Ruth was incredibly patient and started from the basics in order to help me with vibrato. Rather than shrugging it off as a problem that I had to handle alone, she worked with me every lesson to develop a beautiful vibrato that was easy for me to use and sustain.
She gave me several different techniques and practice exercises that helped me to learn a new way of playing my violin , even from the way I hold the instrument.
While this was an adjustment for me, it not only allowed me to regain my vibrato , but because Ruth taught me a more effective method of vibrato than I had originally learned, I believe it allowed me to improve the overall quality of my playing and the sound of my instrument.
Although I play violin more recreationally now, I'm now able to enjoy the time I spend with the instrument using a proper technique that is comfortable for me.
I could not thank Ruth enough for what she did for me and for all of her guidance and patience when teaching me. Her teaching method was so helpful in not only solving my problem but also in allowing me to enjoy playing the violin more. Ruth is extremely caring and always made me feel welcome at lessons; I always enjoyed working with her . Even if I had not practiced as much as I should have or was not putting in my best effort, she still guided me with kindness and assisted me with anything I needed.
